Florida income tax, explained

Florida has no state personal income tax, which is one reason it is a popular destination for workers and retirees relocating from higher-tax states. Your paycheck in Florida is reduced only by federal income tax and FICA.

The Florida Department of Revenue administers sales and use tax, corporate income tax, and reemployment tax, but nothing is withheld from employee wages at the state level.

For your paycheck, no state income tax means a Florida worker keeps more of the same gross salary than a counterpart in an income-tax state — only federal income tax and FICA are withheld. Florida is not tax-free overall, though: it relies on sales tax and, for property owners, property taxes, neither of which appears on your pay stub. Workers moving to Florida — retirees, remote employees, or those relocating for a job — see the state-tax line disappear from each check while their federal withholding and FICA stay unchanged.

Frequently asked questions

Does Florida tax my salary?
No. Florida levies no individual income tax, so there is no state withholding on wages — only federal income tax and FICA apply.
Do I still file a Florida state tax return?
There is no individual income-tax return to file in Florida. You still file a federal return with the IRS.
How is my Florida take-home pay calculated?
Start from gross pay, subtract federal income tax (based on your bracket and standard deduction) and FICA. The calculator above does this for any salary or pay frequency.
I work remotely for a Florida company but live in another state — is my salary tax-free?
Florida won't tax your wages, but your state of residence generally taxes its residents' income regardless of where the employer is. If you live in a state with an income tax, you may still owe it on Florida-sourced pay; Florida itself has no withholding.

Where you live changes your take-home pay. Compare similar states and popular no-income-taxdestinations — a common check when you’re weighing a move:

Estimate only — not tax advice. This calculator gives an approximate take-home figure based on 2026 federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare (FICA), and, where shown, state income tax. It does not account for tax credits (such as the Child Tax Credit or EITC), the Alternative Minimum Tax, preferential capital-gains rates, or itemized deductions beyond the standard deduction. Your actual paycheck may differ. Consult a qualified tax professional for advice specific to your situation.
