Texas income tax, explained
Texas has no state personal income tax — a prohibition written into the Texas Constitution. Your Texas paycheck is reduced only by federal income tax and FICA, with no state withholding line.
The state raises revenue through sales tax, franchise tax on businesses, and property taxes. Because there is no income tax, there is no individual state return to file.
For take-home pay, no state income tax means a Texas worker keeps more of the same gross salary than someone in a state that withholds income tax — only federal income tax and FICA come out of each check. It doesn't make Texas tax-free overall: as noted, the state leans on sales and property taxes instead, which never appear on your pay stub but do factor into your cost of living. If you're relocating to Texas from a state with an income tax, expect the state-tax line to disappear from your paycheck while your federal withholding and FICA stay the same.

Frequently asked questions
- Does Texas have a state income tax?
- No. The Texas Constitution prohibits a personal income tax, so only federal income tax and FICA are withheld from your pay.
- Why are Texas property and sales taxes higher?
- Without an income tax, Texas leans on sales and property taxes for revenue. Those don't appear on your paycheck, but they affect overall cost of living.
- How do I estimate my Texas take-home pay?
- Subtract federal income tax and FICA from your gross pay. Enter your salary and pay frequency above to get the number instantly.
- I work for a Texas employer but live in another state — is my pay still tax-free?
- Texas won't tax your wages, but the state where you live generally taxes its residents' income no matter where it's earned. If you're a resident of a state with an income tax, you may still owe that state — even while working remotely for a Texas company. Texas itself withholds nothing from your pay.
