Tennessee income tax, explained
Tennessee has no state income tax on wages, and as of 2021 it has no income tax at all. The Hall income tax — which applied only to interest and dividends — was phased out and fully repealed for tax years beginning January 1, 2021.
For 2026, Tennessee workers see only federal income tax and FICA withheld from their paychecks. The state relies on a relatively high sales tax instead.
That leaves a straightforward paycheck for 2026: gross pay minus federal income tax and FICA, with no state withholding line. Tennessee balances the absence of an income tax with one of the higher combined sales-tax rates in the country, a cost that lands at the cash register rather than on your pay stub. Moving to Tennessee from a state with an income tax removes that withholding line from each check, while your federal tax and FICA stay the same.

Frequently asked questions
- Does Tennessee tax wages?
- No. Tennessee has never taxed wages, and since 2021 it has no income tax on any income, including interest and dividends.
- What was the Hall income tax?
- It was a Tennessee tax on interest and dividend income. It was gradually reduced and fully repealed for tax years beginning January 1, 2021.
- What reduces my Tennessee paycheck?
- Only federal income tax and FICA. There is no state income-tax withholding. The calculator above shows the full breakdown.
- I work for a Tennessee company but live in another state — is my salary tax-free?
- Tennessee won't tax your wages, but the state where you reside generally taxes its residents' income no matter where the employer is located. A resident of an income-tax state may still owe that state on Tennessee-sourced pay; Tennessee withholds nothing.
