Nevada income tax, explained
Nevada's constitution prohibits a state income tax, so wages and salaries are not taxed at the state level. The only mandatory deductions from a Nevada paycheck are federal income tax and FICA.
Nevada funds its government largely through sales tax and gaming taxes. Employers pay a Modified Business (payroll) Tax, but that is an employer-side tax and is not withheld from employee paychecks.
On your paycheck, the absence of a state income tax means only federal income tax and FICA are withheld, so a Nevada worker keeps more of the same salary than someone in an income-tax state. Nevada still raises revenue — sales and gaming taxes carry much of the load — but those reach prices rather than your pay stub. If you move to Nevada from a state that taxes income, the state-tax line simply drops off each check while federal withholding and FICA stay the same.

Frequently asked questions
- Does Nevada have a state income tax?
- No. A state income tax is barred by the Nevada Constitution, so no state tax is withheld from your wages.
- What is the Modified Business Tax?
- It is a tax paid by employers on their payroll. It does not reduce your individual take-home pay and is not an employee withholding.
- What comes out of my Nevada paycheck?
- Only federal income tax and FICA (6.2% Social Security up to the wage base, plus 1.45% Medicare). Enter your pay above to see the breakdown.
- I work remotely for a Nevada employer from another state — is my pay tax-free?
- Nevada won't tax your wages, but the state where you live generally taxes its residents' income no matter where it's earned. A resident of an income-tax state may still owe that state on Nevada earnings; Nevada withholds nothing itself.
