Maryland income tax, explained

Maryland has a progressive state income tax from 2% to 5.75%, and the 2025 budget added new top brackets of 6.25% (on taxable income over $500,000 for single filers) and 6.5% (over $1,000,000). Maryland's standard deduction is a fixed $3,350 for single filers and $6,700 for married couples filing jointly in 2026 — the 2025 budget repealed the older 15%-of-income formula and set a flat amount, indexed for inflation going forward. Maryland also grants a separate $3,200 personal exemption per filer (which phases out above $100,000 of income); this estimate folds it into the deduction.

The most important Maryland caveat: every county and Baltimore City levies a mandatory local income tax of roughly 2.25% to 3.30% on top of the state rate. For most residents that local tax is a larger share of the bill than the marginal state rate. This calculator estimates the Maryland state tax only, so your actual take-home is lower by your county's rate. Maryland publishes one bracket schedule for single and married-filing-separately filers and another for joint, head-of-household, and qualifying-surviving-spouse filers; this estimate follows both.

Frequently asked questions

What is Maryland's income tax rate for 2026?
Maryland's state rate is progressive from 2% to 5.75%, with new 6.25% and 6.5% brackets on very high incomes (over $500,000 and $1,000,000). On top of that, every county charges its own mandatory local income tax.
Does this calculator include Maryland county tax?
No. Maryland's mandatory county and Baltimore City income taxes (about 2.25%–3.30%) are charged in addition to the state rate and are not included here — so your real Maryland take-home is lower than shown. Check your county's rate to refine the estimate.
What is Maryland's standard deduction?
For 2026 it is a fixed $3,350 (single) and $6,700 (married filing jointly), after the 2025 budget replaced Maryland's old 15%-of-income formula with a flat amount. Maryland also gives a separate $3,200 personal exemption per filer (phasing out above $100,000 of income), which this estimate folds into the deduction.
