Virginia income tax, explained

Virginia uses a progressive income tax with four brackets — 2%, 3%, 5%, and a top rate of 5.75%. The brackets are unusually compressed: the top 5.75% rate begins at just $17,000 of taxable income, and the thresholds have been unchanged since 1990. Because they are not adjusted for inflation, nearly every full-time worker reaches the top marginal rate.

For 2026, Virginia's standard deduction is $8,750 for single filers and $17,500 for married couples filing jointly (this elevated amount is scheduled to expire after 2026). Virginia has no separate Head of Household status and no local income tax on wages, so your state tax is the rate schedule applied to income after the standard deduction.

Frequently asked questions

What is Virginia's income tax rate for 2026?
Virginia has a progressive income tax with rates of 2%, 3%, 5%, and 5.75%. The top 5.75% rate applies to Virginia taxable income over $17,000, so most workers pay 5.75% on the bulk of their income.
What is Virginia's standard deduction?
For 2026 it is $8,750 for single filers (and married filing separately) and $17,500 for married couples filing jointly. This increased amount is scheduled to revert to $3,000 / $6,000 after tax year 2026 unless lawmakers extend it.
Why does Virginia's top tax rate start so low?
Virginia's brackets have not changed since 1990 and are not adjusted for inflation. The $17,000 top threshold has stayed flat for decades, so nearly every full-time worker reaches the 5.75% top marginal rate.
