Iowa income tax, explained
Iowa completed its move to a flat income tax ahead of schedule: for 2026 a single 3.8% rate applies to all taxable income. Iowa starts from your federal taxable income, so the federal standard deduction is built in before the flat rate applies.
The flat rate replaced Iowa's old graduated brackets (which topped out far higher), simplifying the calculation to 3.8% of income after the standard deduction.

Frequently asked questions
- What is Iowa's income tax rate for 2026?
- Iowa has a flat 3.8% income tax for 2026, after fully phasing out its graduated brackets.
- Why do some older pages say 3.9%?
- An earlier law targeted 3.9%, but Senate File 2442 accelerated the cut to a flat 3.8%, which is the rate in effect.
- Does Iowa use the federal standard deduction?
- Effectively yes — Iowa begins from federal taxable income, so the federal standard deduction reduces your Iowa tax base.
